The Name History: Founded in 1884, the school spent over 120 years named Tri-State Normal College (later Tri-State University). The original "Tri-State" name came from its physical location in Angola, Indiana—which sits right near the border where Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio meet.
The 2008 Change: In 2008, the school officially changed its name to Trine University. This honored the Trine family's contributions while helping the school brand itself as a competitive private university, removing the generic "Tri-State" label that people often mistook for a state-funded school.
